Measure the area and average fill depth
For a rectangle, measure length and width in feet. If you already know the area, choose Known area and enter square feet instead. Enter the average fill depth across that area, then choose inches or feet. Twelve inches equals one foot.
Fill volume formula
Cubic yards = length (feet) × width (feet) × depth (feet) ÷ 27
For a known area: cubic yards = area (square feet) × depth (feet) ÷ 27
Worked example
A 60-foot by 100-foot area with 2 feet of average fill depth has an estimated in-place volume of 60 × 100 × 2 ÷ 27 = 444.44 cubic yards, before any adjustments.
Assumptions and limitations
This calculator assumes a rectangular area and a representative average depth. It does not model detailed contours, slopes, irregular boundaries, unsuitable soil removal or separate layers. No automatic compaction, shrinkage, settlement or delivery adjustment is applied.
Common fill dirt questions
Is this the amount of loose dirt I should order?
No. In-place geometric volume is not the same as loose delivered volume. The relationship depends on the material and placement conditions. JMEC can review the site and material information before quantities are ordered.
Can I enter a depth in inches?
Yes. Select inches beside Average fill depth. The calculator divides inches by 12 before calculating cubic yards. Decimal measurements are accepted.
What if the depth changes across the site?
Use a representative average depth from your project information. This simple calculator cannot verify that average or replace a survey and grading review.
